NASS Assistants Protest, Say Dep Speaker’s Aide Died Due To Unpaid Salaries

The death of Mr. Hassan Abiodun, an aide to the Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun of the House of Representatives, on Tuesday sparked protest at the National Assembly, as his colleagues attributed his death to unpaid salaries.
The protesting workers argued that Abiodun was unable to pay his hospital bill owing to the irregular payment of salaries and allowances by the National Assembly Management.
Before his death, Abiodun was said to have suffered appendicitis, and admitted in an Abuja hospital and was supposed to be operated on, on June 5, 2017, but could not pay the hospital bill of N165, 000 for the surgery.

The appendicitis was said to have ruptured while efforts were still being made by the deceased family to raise the money for the surgery. Consequently, Abiodun died on June 9 and was buried on Saturday June 10.
Sequel to his demise, his colleagues on Tuesday staged a protest around the National Assembly Complex.

Newsmen were later told by Mr. Sanni Onogu, the chief press secretary to Senate President Bukola Saraki, that the Senate President had summoned the National Assembly Management to a meeting on the issue.
